Wolfsburg’s Remarkable Hat-Trick.

There are many who say that the Champion’s League should only involve league champions from the various league competitions around the World. Those who take that view would have been pleased to witness the final of the Women’s European Champions League, as you could not have had two more worthy finalists.   French women’s team Olympique Lyonnais lost their European Women’s Champions League title at Stamford Bridge last night 1-0 to underdogs Wolfsburg from Germany; who were cheered on by thousands on Germans in London for the men’s final this weekend between Dortmund and Bayern Munich.

The French side had been undefeated in 118 games and had been on a run of 32 wins in a row until a recent draw in the French Cup. They had wrapped up the French Championship going through the season unbeaten so far, with one game to play this weekend. To make this all the more impressive they have 21 wins in 21 games, and scored 129 goals and conceded only 5 goals. This was their seventh league title in a row.

Their only draw came in the cup competition the Coupe de France feminine and that was against Montpellier. The following game they came out and spanked Issy 9-0. Unfortunately this final was teh first game of the season that they failed to score in, in any competition.

Last night they were going for a hat trick of titles in the Women’s European Champions league and looking to become the first women’s team to win the title three years in succession. This was their fourth final and the fourth time they had met a German team in the final. In 2010 they lost on penalties to Potsdam then beat them the following year and beat Frankfurt last year. However it was not to be.

Martine Muller’s penalty which handed Wolfsburg victory brought to an end Lyonnais’ 118 game unbeaten run. It also ended a great season for the German club, who won the Women’s Bundesliga and the German Cup in the last fortnight. Prior to this Wolfsburg had never won a major trophy, they now have three in one season.
