Hitting the Jackpot

For those who were astounded by fooballer Gareth Bale’s transfer fee of GBP85.3million from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid, this has paled into insignificance when you look at this weekend’s big bout in Las Vegas between Floyd Mayweather jnr and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

The MGM Grand hotel where the bout is to be staged sold out all tickets within 12 hours.  Ringside seats which were originally being sold for USD$2000 are now being sold for USD$47,500 online. The actual take at the box office is estimated at being in excess of USD$23million.

The overall gross revenue and gate receipts are expected to be in the region of USD$190million, when one adds up gate receipts, TV rights, merchandise and the like.

When Mayweather who was previously known as “The Money Man” fought Oscar de la Hoya six years ago the pay per view receipts, thanks to 24 million people tuning in, were in excess of USD$131million. This bout is expected to surpass these figures as many believe the Mexican is the man capable of inflicting his first professional defeat on Floyd Mayweather.

Alvarez, aged 23  is undefeated in 43 contests, 36 year old Mayweather has not lost in 46 fights.

Mayweather despite his recognised defensive skills has admitted that this may be his toughest bout yet, but he will still walk away with in the region of USD$60million.

The big question is will he walk away with the specially created 24-carat gold belt for this world super welterweight unification bout?

Not surprisingly de la Hoya who came the closest to defeating Mayweather believes it will be Alvarez who will go home with it. Many other boxing pundits feel it is a fight too close to call, either way it should be some scrap.
