Striking Gold Given a New Meaning in Sochi

The Winter Olympics are now underway in Sochi, but there will be ten commemorative medals which will be extra special.

Ten medals have reportedly been embedded with fragments from a meteor that hit the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia’s southern Ural region a year ago. This was the second largest reported meteor strike and injured approximately 12,000 people.

Fragments that will be found in the medals were apparently taken from a 1250 pound chunk of the space rock taken out of a Russian lake in October. Officials have commissioned 50 medals in total 10 of which will be given to Olympians who win gold in their eight different events, including alpine skiing, cross country skiing, curling, ice hockey, short track, skeleton, ski jumping and speed skating on February 15th, which is the anniversary of the strike.
