Gold Lightening Strikes Twice

Incredibly the Winter Olympics witnessed its first ever tie the other night. The Alpine Skiing event saw Tina Maze of Slovenia and Dominique Gisin of Switzerland both complete the course in 1 minute 41.57 seconds on wednesday.

The two friends stepped onto the podium together and wrote their names into the history books. This was the eighth time that Olympic gold has been awarded to two competitors in the Winter Games but the first time in Alpine skiing.

Some who follow the sport say that if it was ever going to happen it was always likely to involve Maze and Gisin. For Gisin it was only her third downhill victory, but incredibly two of those have now been ties.

In January 2009 she shared a World Cup victory with Swedish great Anja Paerson in Austria. That was the last time prior to Wednesday that a women’s downhill event had ended in a tie.

Maze was also involved in a three-way tie back in October 2002 in the Giant Slalom event at the World Cup event also in Austria. Sharing the podium with Norway’s Andrine Flemmen and Nicole Hosp of Austria.

Some would say it was Tina Amazing!
